The University was established as a non-residential multi-campus institution conceived on a Presidential model after Harvard University. It became the first University of Technology and the first State University in Nigeria, with the main campus at Enugu and others at Abakaliki, Awka, and Nnewi. At inception, it had three faculties: Engineering, Science, and Technology.
In 1985, a merger with the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) introduced new faculties such as Education, Environmental Sciences, Health Sciences, Law, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, and Agricultural Sciences. The merger operated briefly under an Interim Joint Council until its demerger in December 1986.
By 1987, the four campuses were operational: Abakaliki (Agric & Veterinary Medicine), Awka (Basic Applied Sciences, Law & Social Sciences), Nnewi (Health Sciences), and Enugu (Engineering & Technology). Each campus had a Deputy Vice-Chancellor as administrative head.
Following the creation of Enugu State in 1991, ASUTECH became ESUT. The Awka and Nnewi campuses became Nnamdi Azikiwe University, while Enugu and Abakaliki campuses formed ESUT. ESUT retained ASUTECH’s identity, including its logo, colours, and philosophy.
After the creation of Ebonyi State in 1996, ESUT forfeited its Abakaliki campus, which became Ebonyi State University (EBSU). ESUT re-established its College of Medicine at Nsukka, later moved to Parklane Enugu in 2005 as the ESUT College of Medicine and Teaching Hospital.
On February 14, 2006, under the Vice-Chancellorship of Prof. Ikechukwu Chidobem, the University relocated from its temporary site at Independence Layout, Enugu to its permanent campus at Agbani in Nkanu West L.G.A., fondly named Ebeano City.
The founding fathers of Enugu State University of Science and Technology conceived a unique University that must be closely related to the society and above all serves as a catalyst in the technological advancement of the people irrespective of race, creed, gender or political affiliation.
